Behind The Mask

Updated: Mar 4

This blog is going to be a little different to the rest..

I'm going to tell you about a new training course I have taken and go a little deep and tell you just a little about my personal life experiences.

I'll set the scene for ya..

It's early October 2019, I was sat on my couch late one eve with Zak snoring way next to me, scrolling through Facebook Lash Forums when I noticed a post by Julie Knight.

I met Julie in April 2019 at the Lash Social UK and had a lovely chat with her and immediately started following her and her work on social media.

The post on this forum explained that she had launched a new, online training course called Behind The Mask (and you know me I'm all up for some extra knowledge)🤓

This training, however, was a little different..

Behind The Mask is a free online training designed to help hair and beauty professionals to spot the signs that someone is experiencing domestic abuse and how to respond in the best way.

You see the thing is, I'm not just a Lash Artist. I am a therapist for my clients.

From the very start of my career I found that when my clients were relaxed and felt safe in my space they would tell me all their woes, get it off their chest and together we would put the world to right. Even if I didn't say anything at all I am more of an impartial, unbiased ear to listen.

I've always said, "what's said in the lash room, stays in the lash room" but what happens when you can't, what if you're seeing someone suffer, what can we do to help?

Behind The Mask gives you an insight to how you can respond and what you can do to help.

Something that a lot of people don't know is that I, myself, am a survivor of domestic abuse (mental, verbal and physical abuse). In a couple of my past relationships if I'm totally honest, with the last experience ending with the police and victim support being involved. Mentally and physically I was broken. I was in the darkest place I’ve ever been, feeling like there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

Both times I just remember feeling really embarrassed. I always knew it wasn't quite right what was happening but I didn't know how to tell anyone. It had been going on for so long that I almost 'justified' what was happening. It had become a normal, every day thing for me. I was wondering through life with rose tinted glasses on for so long and I wish I had spoken out sooner or that someone had noticed the signs sooner to help me lift those glasses and see that it wasn't right, it wasn't normal and that I didn't deserve what I was going through.

No one deserves that.

I was a little wary of taking the Behind The Mask training at first. I was worried that it would trigger previous feelings and emotions that I've spent years working on with therapists and spiritual healers... So I approached with caution ready to hit the pause button if it was all a bit too much.

And it didn't!

I felt at ease and calm throughout all 3 videos. Julie explained the different types of abuse and how I, as a lash artist, can spot warning signs within my clients and more importantly how I can respond to it, what to say and what I can do to help.

Julie, you have the most soothing voice and all the more important, you explained everything so well throughout every single video. Staying honest and open but also mindful of that fact that the person listening could have been in or even be in that situation right now.

I wiped away my tears of relief and emailed to let them know I had taken the training for my certificate to be issued. I knew at that point that I wanted to be able to offer this training to my students so they could have this knowledge and know what they can do to help if their clients or someone they know is going through domestic abuse.

After a quick chat with Julie, I became a champion for Behind The Mask.

I am now one of 1000+ champions and my training studio is one of 130+ training schools that offer this training as part of every training course that I offer.

If you would like to join the 10,000+ therapists, hairdressers, lash artists and I'm sure many more that have taken the Behind The Mask training, then click on the picture below and it will take you straight there.

This 22 minute online course isn’t, by any means, an extensive training course but more of an insight giving you the knowledge and the tools to help others and make a difference. Together, we can help to change or save a life 🙏🏼

All my love,

Georgie ♡
